Hello, and a wait list for a new watch? Maybe the latest i-Watch.
Maybe also for a rare mechanical to come up for auction. And if you
think Rolex represents the pinnacle of Swiss watchmaking, you're not
horologically knowledgeable IMO. Rolex has great marketing and brand
recognition as does Daimler-Benz for cars. I have a circa 1980 Rolex
GMT master in my collection. that I purchased it new in 1980 for $995.00
US. It has developed a "spidered" dial because of a paint defect.
Although an automatic the mainspring broke about 15 years later. My
best mechanical/automatic for reliability has been a Japanese-made
"Wittnauer 2000" (also sold as "Orient") that I purchased at a military
exchange in 1975 for $75.00 US. It keeps perfect time and has never
been cleaned/serviced. Go figure. Sincerely,

Thank You for the reply. Since I made my last post, I did som
checking with a couple of the Rolex ADs that I've dealt with in th
past and found that indeed the wait list for a "stainless
new Daytona is 3 to 5 years. Several of the ADs will not even add yo
to the list unless you have purchased from them in the past. Als
from some reading on the turf forum - what I heard at the ADs seems t
be confirmed. Grey market on these seems to be +5k to +8k ove
retail, maybe more

No claims here on my horological knowledge of my opinion of th
pinnacles of Swiss watchmaking. Just curious about this strang
situation with the Daytona model from Rolex

It's just a mechanical chronograph, nothing special I'd say. But
there's that brand recognition thing. Back in the Vietnam war era some
of my Army buddies purchased Rolex GMT masters (not knockoffs) for about
$200.00 US. Rolex watches were never an Army issue item, but infantry
officers loved them because of their ruggedness and durability in a high
temp, high humidity environment. Ever wonder why Rolex wasn't the brand
selected by NASA for the astronaut corps? It was Omega but you can do
the research.

Although not represented in all the James Bond movies, Bond's creator,
Ian Fleming, made it quite clear in his books that Bond's watch of
choice was a Rolex (but not the Daytona model). But there are nice
mechanical chronographs from Breitling, Omega and IWC that might take a
little less bite from your bank account. Sincerely,

Hello, and you can also say that about big-caret diamond rings,
one-of-a-kind paintings, vintage automobiles and other items indicative
of one's status. People don't fork over high bucks for a "luxury"
wristwatch because they want an item to just tell the time of day. Your
smartphone provides that quite nicely. Sincerely,

I was referring to a wrist watch for use as a wrist watch.

Investments are a whole different thing.
