Rather nice video of the clockworks of Big Ben.

I was surprised when they added weight to the pendulum to speed it up,
but the narrator said it raised the center of gravity; I guess with more
effect than the slowing down due to the increased mass, huh?

The speed of light is 1.8*10^12 furlongs per fortnight.

The period of a pendulum is invariant with the mass. It only depends on
the length of the pendulum and the strength of gravity. The mass drops
out of the equation because gravity pulls on a greater mass with more
force which is exactly matched by the greater resistance due to inertia
by the greater mass. The same effect as when Galileo dropped two
different mass weights off the tower of Pisa and they crashed to earth
at the same time.
