Discussion:
How do you remove the stem?

I recently bought a watch off Ebay. I like the watch but notice that
there is a bit of lint on the dial. I'd like to uncase the movement
and get the lint out. The watch uses a ETA 2892 movement. So
how does one go about removing the stem so I can get the
movement out?

Now before you say "take it to a watchmaker", I'd really rather
do it myself.

Thanks!

look along the where the stem runs to the crown wheel, on the top plate
you will what looks like a rectangular slot with a circle shape in the
middle, use a small screwdriver that fits the slot and lightly press
down, the stem should disengage and you can remove it from the case.

you can see it here on the upper section of the plate, its a round hole
with a slot inside with a smaller inside that

to put it back in, just line it up and press the stem/crown home while
turning or wiggling the crown a bit

the reason you use a screw driver and not a pin to press the set lever
in is if you press it in too far it can pop out of alignment with the
setting system which then needs to have the hands, dial and calendar
system removed to put back in place.

well yeah, thats the best option since he/she will have all the right
tools, etc, its a five minute for me to do, and its too easy for an
untrained person to f#ck it up.

so good luck, and if you do stuff it up it will cost you a lot more to fix.

Throw it really hard against a concrete wall. If the stem doesn't come
out throw it again and again and again. If that doesn't work throw it
on the floor and jump up and down on it repeatedly until the stem comes
out. If that doesn't work, run it over with a steam roller until the
stem finally relents.

Do you know what could stem from these actions?
Anarchy in the watch collecting world.

Nawww! Never do decaf! I was just recounting some of my attempts at
watch repair.

Not fondly. I actually had forgotten it. The nice woman in the Post
Office helped me word the claim.

another point I forgot to mention, is the watch water resistant?, if it
is and you open it, you have no way of knowing it's still waterresistant
after you have closed the case.

No, the watch wasn't a highly water resistant one. I followed your
instructions and it worked perfectly. Got the lint out and it looks
great now. I really appreciate your assistance!
