Dear Horologists,

I am working on a PBS & Nat Geo film about mapping, and we are trying to track down a replica of Harrison's 4th chronometer for our depiction of Cook's NZ expedition. I know the chronometer that Cook actually had aboard with him was NOT Harrison's 4th chronometer but looked and worked pretty much exactly like it, so a replica of Harrison's 4th will do just fine.

If any of you have information as to where we can get a replica, or a very similar looking version, it would be great to get a reply from you.

Thanks!

The best scientific documentary yet to be made will feature a tragedy that began with a watch and a fateful conclusion that turns out to be wrong -

".. our clocks kept so good a correspondence with the Heavens that I
doubt it not but they would prove the revolutions of the Earth to be
constant... " John Flamsteed to Jonas Moore

From this exceptionally poor conclusion they lost the principles which connect the 24 hour AM/PM system to the Lat/Long system using the rotation of the Earth through 360 degrees once a day and unfortunately they still believe the Earth's rotation falls out of sync with the 24 hour cycle -

"The Earth spins on its axis about 366 and 1/4 times each year, but there are only 365 and 1/4 days per year." NASA

A genuine documentary that would fascinate viewers as to how the timekeeping systems we use today and every day was developed from antiquity up to the time of marine chronometers. The Egyptians realized, using the return of Sirius after its disappearance behind the glare of the Sun,that to keep their festivals fixed to the annual points required that an extra day is added after every fourth 365 day cycle making it 1461 days to 4 years or its dynamical equivalent of 1461 rotations to 4 orbital circuits. That conclusion of Flamsteed screwed everything up by giving the Earth 4 phantom rotations it does not have or a nonsensical 1465 rotations for 4 years/4 orbital cycles.

You would imagine horologists would care but they really don't.
