I have a Seiko 5 7S26 water resistant watch but it does not say how water
resistant it is. Does anyone know?

On the back it says: "ST. Steel 7S26-01V0 A4 WP"

Thanks :)

It doesn't depend as much on the engine, as on the case and seals. Some are
more than others. Some seiko 5s are designed for diving and usually say how
much water resistant they are. Otherwise, you can probably shower in it, wash
your hands but not much more.

Wow.. Good questioon. My 1969 vintage has a rubber grommet under the crown.
Works good for taking a bath and swimming.

A watch marked as water resistant without a depth indication is designed to
withstand rain and accidental splashes of water only. Do not submerge such
a watch intentionally. WR 50 Meters is the minimum that is suitable for
actually wearing in water as in a pool or shower.

I asked the same question of a guy in the PMWF who seems pretty knowlegable,
and is a dealer in oriental and Swiss watches. He says that the standard
for a Japanese watch to be just "water resistant" is 50M. Swiss watches are
30M with the same marking. I take this to mean they're safe to get wet, but
I'd be careful swimming, since instantaneous pressures on the watch can
easily exceed that.

Hi John-

The non-rated Seiko 5's do not have an aggressive amount of water
resistance. There's a caseback gasket and a crown gasket, and the crystal's
sealed good and tight to the case, but water will make it's way in if you
immerse it/swim in it. Generally a non-screwdown crown means you don't have
to worry about accidental splashes, but it's not for swimming/diving. For
that matter I wouldn't make a habit out of wearing it in the shower either;
the hot water and soap will degrade the seals. The crown, which again
doesn't screw down, is the most likely point of moisture infiltration.

Regards,

Jack

Thanks Jack, and to all of you for your help. What I get from this is to
keep it away from water and definitely from submerging. But not to sweat it
if it gets splashed or rained on but to dry it off when feasible. Also that
the crown is the most likely point of water entry. That helps so much.
Thanks!
