I wonder how much of the decline is also caused by the new makers opening outside Switzerland?

Much of the decline is due to a collapse in sales in China. The
anti-corruption drive by the Communist Party is having a marked effect...

Fact is, many (OK, most) Swiss makers carefully exploit the
possibilities in the laws and regulations surrounding the coveted "Swiss
Made" label. Cases and other parts are routinely made outside
Switzerland, for instance, and only finished and assembled in the country.

I hadn't thought about the Chinese factor and I expect your probably correct about that. I read an article a few months back about the Wine industry feeling the proverbial pinch from decreased imports into China. I've also heard companies that were quick to get into the Chinese market are beginning to grow weary of the continuous increases on site operating expenses I can't remember the exact euphemism they used but companies are growing tired of the constant payoffs needed to keep things moving.

Note also that the picture WRT Swiss watches is complicated by the fact
that there are a good number of Swiss marques operating in Asia and
China which are all but unknown here. In other words, the competition
is much more fierce.
