I have had a triple-chime Howard Miller Carriage Clock for about 15 years now. Recently, I have noticed that the nut that holds the minute hand in place has been coming loose and falling off. However, if I screw it back in place and only hand tighten it, the clock stops ticking after about 10 minutes.
Consequently, I have to leave the nut loose and every time I have to wind the clock every 7 days, I find the nut had fallen off onto the ledge just inside of the door.

I had Timesavers.com send me 2 new nuts and tried both, but with the same results. Does anyone have any idea why this clock would work normally for years with the nut being tight on the minute hand and suddenly behave this way?

TIA for any advice or ideas.

the hour hand might have ridden up and is binding on the minute hand,
take the minute hand off, push the hour hand down so it is just past the
top of the brass hour wheel pipe but not so far down that the hour hand
touches and rubs on the dial, then replace the minute hand, fit the hand
nut firmly, now check the hour hand centre, there should be some free
play,

Thanks for the tip - I'll give it a try and report back to see what the results are.
