Hi,

I recently got a Casio Wave Ceptor watch and would like to know if
anyone has successfully recieved the WWVB time signal in Ottawa,
Canada. If they have which direction, orientation, was the clock or
watch pointed. Also, what were the weather conditions during
synchronization.

Thanks

Ottawa should be no problem ( or I should say no worse than the Northeast
US - you can have local problems if you are near a source of radio noise,
etc.). Here is the propagation map for 0600 UTC (1AM local time):

As you can see the signal covers almost all of the populated regions of
Canada.

Are you having reception problems?

If so, try leaving your watch overnight in a window facing the direction of
Colorado, or even outdoors if possible. Make sure your watch is attempting
synch in the middle of the night when the signal is strongest.

I put the watch in a south facing window, pointing the watch face
southwest. But, during the night it was raining heavily, would the
clouds reduce the signal reception?

Thanks.

The clouds should not reduce signal reception, however lightning will
interfere with reception. The most important considerations are positioning
the watch as stated in the Casio Manual and also locating the watch away
from electrical devices that can interfere with reception. It is not
necessary to leave the watch outside especially if the watch is positioned
in a window facing in the direction of Colorado as outlined in the Casio
Manual. It's really very simple and not much of a problem.

Looking at the propagation map posted by Jack Denver, the radio signal
might be iffy to Ottawa. (Hmm, id iffy a word?)

Anyway, I have two Casio Wave Ceptor watches, and my wife has one (that
I gave her). In Connecticut, they receive the radio signal about five,
or six nights a week. It seems like the rubber like body of the
digital is a little more reliable that the metal analog watches. Since
all you really care is if it receives the calibration signal once, or
twice a week. Give it a few days, you should be just fine.

Yes, place them on the window facing the direction of Colorado.

Not to ruffle a few feathers, (a while back we have a 125 message
discussion of "are atomic watches really necessary"), I just LOVE
my Casio Wave Ceptor watch!

I also have a couple of atomic clocks (Radio Controlled to be correct)
on the wall.
(my wife thinks I am nuts, no comments please)

I would like to know if you have the band or the watch face facing the
window. In the manual, the watch band is pointed towards the window.

Thanks

That watch band is closed (it is one of those plastic resin bands) and the
watch is standing on the buckle so that it is standing upright. This is
described in the Casio Manual for the Model 3016 Waveceptor. You then point
the watch in the direction of Colorado. In my case, that is North East. See
if you can download a manual for the Casio Model 3016 and have a look at how
they want you to position that watch. It is very clearly illustrated in the
manual.

Thanks for all your replies. By precisely following the illustration
in the manual, the watch synchronized this morning at 2 am. I also
think that the clear night skies helped improve reception.

I was also able to synchronize again this afternoon out in the suburbs
with full signal strength, away from all tall buildings.
